Music, Drama, Art
Art All of the year groups are preparing their designs for their final pieces. In Year 3 the children have been consolidating their understanding of tone in preparation for creating their collage cave walls. Year 4 are using their knowledge of Hundertwasser’s art style to design their own artworks.
Year 5 having been using their understanding of two way and four way symmetry to create the templates they will use for their clay work.
In Year 6 the children are composing their plans for their final pieces, thinking about the different levels in which they will draw their seed head details.
The creative arts elective children have chosen their individual subject detail for their final pieces and have been drawing their animals using the www.how2drawanimals.com software to support them. Their final pieces will be completed using oil pastels. Most children have been inspired by artist Franz Marc while some are looking at Jean Michel Basquait.
The children studying art as part of their rotation have been learning to create tone using only a biro. They have been drawing pumpkins and using a biro to add detail and tone. Altogether a great week art-wise!
Photography The year 7&8s have been trialling out a new project this week in their photography elective. In clear tubs there was a mixture of coloured water and oil. When the oil mixes with the water it makes round flat balls. It is then their time to stand very still with the lens very close (sometimes too close!) to the water to take the perfectly focussed photograph. The results of these photographs are absolutely stunning from every student.
Drama There has been an air of excitement in Year 4 as each class has now been told what play they are performing for the Lower School pantomime in December and we have begun to audition pupils for the various roles.
In Year 5 children have been continuing to look at traditional fairy tales and either freeze framing or adding five words to each character. This is to show them that facial expression and body language is still the most important thing when performing rather than what is being actually said. Year 6 have been creating freeze frames of their superheroes saving the day from their arch nemesis. We also discussed the importance of stage positioning on stage; they performed some excellent scenes and focussed on their characterisation.
In Year 7 & 8 the rotation group were able to perform their silent movie scenes and demonstrate they understood the key characters and features of the genre. They used soundtrap to create the music for their scenes and it was fantastic to see that they had thought carefully about the music and how it fitted in to the change of direction in their scenes. The elective group have been creating storyboards of a key scene in their films. They thought carefully about how the camera angle they chose would affect not only the overall feel of the scene but how the audience perception would change depending on the angle.
Year 7 has been busy practicing for the upcoming poetry competition on Thursday 15th October. They have been specifically working on their inflection and performing their poem rather than reciting it.
Music This week has been another busy time in the music department. On Tuesday we pre-recorded the music for the Harvest Festival with both the Year 4 choir and the Upper School choir and now they are getting prepared to perform for the Remembrance Service.
In lessons we have also been very busy; the Reception classes have been looking at the musical element of pitch and have been developing their music and movement skills.
Year 3 have been continuing to develop their work on beats and rhythms and also started some drama work. The Year 4 classes have started to prepare for their Christmas productions and I guarantee that they will be worth the wait!
Year 6 are well into their scheme of work about film music and have been using the Soundtrap programme to compose a piece of music that could be used as their very own theme music. The piece of music has two sections; one reflecting their personalities now and the second section sounding like the desired job in the future.
This week Year 2 have been composing their own pieces of music using tambourines and drums based on crotchets, quavers and minims. Their performances at the end of the lesson were fantastic! It was also lovely to hear them all singing as well this week in preparation for next term’s topic, which is the nativity show!
Some very talented singers in Middle School and Upper School were involved in Haileybury’s Young Singer of the Year competition this week. They had to record themselves performing a classical or a musical theatre song. We will hear the results soon from Haileybury, I wish everyone luck!
