Year 5 Week 5 was another jam packed week for the children in Year 5 which has seen them discovering even more about the heart in science by making paper hearts and labelling them, exploring the route the blood takes through the four chambers and why the heart is a double pump. Creative writing took centre stage in English this week with an independent descriptive writing task where they put their learning on the development of fantasy settings and portals to the test. In geography, the Year 5s have been getting active with their learning. As you can see in the photos, the children were split into teams and were competing against each other to complete a map from memory. This tested their team work, communication and of course, their geographical skills. The teams were really impressive and there have been many merits and Academic Commendations awarded due to fantastic work. Using Google Forms the children have begun to learn about open and closed questions in Computing, creating their own questionnaires and collating results. Finally, with Mrs Nichols they have continued their exploration of the first five books of the Torah and the important Patriarchs of Judaism, with a look at the story of Jacob and Esau, created colourful comic strips to retell the story’s key parts.
Year 6 Year 6 have had a fun and varied week. In English they have been preparing for a creative writing assessment by developing character descriptions. Maths has seen them consolidating their mental and written strategies for addition, subtraction and multiplication ahead of the GL tests before half term. In French the children have been thinking about what they do online and holding conversations using language to describe what games they play and information they search for. In learning about Scott of the Antarctic Year 6 have enjoyed their History lessons by being part of the search party finding the tent and Scott’s diary and discovering further key information about the expeditions. The Roman forum has been the key focus in Latin. The children have drawn comparisons with this and their modern shopping experience. They have reflected on the value of archaeological sites like Pompeii to inform us on the practices of the past and translated lengthy passages on Caecilius’ pursuits within the forum. In DT they are learning basic pattern cutting skills. Everyone has had great fun finalising their slipper design and pupils are now learning how to create a 3D shape that represents their design. In PSHE this week, 6AO were tasked to answer: ‘If you could have a cup of tea with anyone, who would it be and why?’ In a generation of social media influencers and popstars Miss O’Sullivan and Mr Aitchison were truly blown away by the maturity of the responses given by pupils. David Attenborough, Barack Obama and Jane Goodall were just some of the influential people discussed. We look forward to seeing who other form groups would like to have a cup of tea with!
