Green Flag Award By Mr Eglinton
We had a moment of great excitement at the end of last term when the school was awarded its very first Eco-Schools Green Flag award! This highly prestigious award is a result of many years of hard work by many different members of staff and was being discussed when I arrived at Edge Grove in September of 2010 so to finally achieve this is fantastic for the school.
The Green Flag award is an international award that recognises the work that schools, parks and businesses have done to both preserve and improve their environment. In order to apply to be assessed for the award you must first achieve both the bronze and silver awards before applying; this is then followed by a seven step process that all pupils currently at the school will at some stage be part of, it really is a whole school initiative.
There are currently 20,258 schools taking part and only 1388 have been awarded the top award so we are in a very prestigious group.
As a school we now have to start looking forward towards more ways to improve the site and our next focus will be increasing biodiversity and in particular the amount of bees that we can attract to the site in the spring and summer. Hoping in the long run to get our very own bee hive somewhere on site. If you are interested in helping in any way on our next stage please feel free to contact me with questions or ideas.
