This week has been filled with exciting activities including making poppies for Remembrance day, experiments in science as well as the children's’ first Inter House cross country. In science, the children have been investigating how different rocks are formed. They used Starburst sweets to represent sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. As you can imagine, the biggest question on their minds was ‘When can we eat one?’ The children amazed us with their restraint and maturity and were rewarded with a wrapped Starburst to take home. In English, we have been looking at instructional text and the children have been identifying and using some of the features learnt including imperative (bossy) verbs and prepositions. Our week concluded by following some very basic instructions to build a woolly mammoth (think technical challenge in GBBO!) The children discussed which important details were missing and did their best with the information they were given.
We have continued to work on addition and subtraction in maths and have been looking at the surrounding seas and oceans of the UK in topic.
It has been another busy week for Year 4 as preparations continue for the Year 4 class pantomimes. The children have been busy making poppies ready for the whole school Remembrance service and it was wonderful to see the choir performing beautifully during this service.
In maths lessons this week the children retraced their Roman topic by learning how to decipher Roman numerals. Do you have any clocks around your home that still use the Roman numeral system? The children enjoyed using their persuasive skills to plan letters to Boris Johnson discussing the pros and cons of a national lockdown. Each class had an energetic debate exploring the benefits and challenges of life during coronavirus.
In science lessons the children continued to sort animals using their classifying skills. Can your child explain what MRS GREN stands for? The children used atlases and globes to spot the equator and different hemispheres during topic lessons and confidently explained why various countries experience different climates. It was a blinding end of the week as the children dressed up in their brightly coloured clothes to raise money for Children In Need.
Well done to Dylan in year 3 who received his music Blue Peter badge which was designed by Ed Sheeran! To obtain his badge, Dylan completed a form where he had to describe how he enjoyed playing music (he described his piano lessons and how he had been part of the Year 2 showcase). He then spoke to his grandparents about the music they love and what it means to them and noted some memories which he then wrote about. The final part was to list some of his favourite songs and pieces of music - Enola Gay by OMD, Merry Xmas Everyone by Slade and Arioso in G by JS Bach to explain why he likes them. (Yes, they really were his music choices!) Dylan also sent in a photograph of Dylan playing the piano and some sample music sheets.
Well done to Logan in Year 3 who won player of the week at his football club. He received the trophy the week before lockdown so gets to keep this for a whole month rather than the normal week.
We are also very proud of Louie in Year 4 who auditioned for a main part in a West End production which (Covid dependent) will be at a leading theatre during the Christmas holidays. Louie made the final ten out of thousands of auditionees and eventually received the news that he will be the first understudy for this exciting role! We have all watched Louie’s audition and it was fantastic! Watch this space.
