Baccalaureate
Current Covid-19 restrictions mean that some of the normal Autumn term highlights of the Edge Grove Baccalaureate have had to be adapted. However, this has not dampened the pupils’ enthusiasm and keenness to get involved. We are delighted to see that the 2020 Baccalaureate Food Challenge is well underway, and the children are ready to start planning! This week, Miss McDonald and Mrs Sharp met with Year 7 to launch the challenge. Embracing the spirit of independent thinking and responsibility, the children have been invited to form their own groups, and decide on various roles to own: leader, dietician, time-keeper, account manager and facilitator. Next week, they will find out which member of staff they will be designing a bespoke meal for, and will think as a group how they can do so within a tight budget. We have high hopes for Year 8 to sail through this challenge given what they learned this time last year! Good luck to everyone and I look forward to seeing your recipes and meal plans soon.
In the Upper School forms this week... The Year 7s have debated whether it is more important to fit in or be unique. It was lovely to hear different ideas and viewpoints; there were even variations to the definitions of ‘fitting in’ or ‘being unique’. The fundamental theme from all pupils was ‘to just be you’ and people will like ‘you’ for being who ‘you’ are!
In Year 8, after some hungry mornings whilst waiting for lunch, 8RD have decided to see whether they can change school policy on snacks in school and get a vending machine for the Upper School pupils. The class have been brainstorming ideas and are putting together a presentation supported by a spreadsheet to analyse the costs and benefits of this to school. The children are working to identify a local charity to support with any profits made from the vending machine. The children would like this to support disadvantaged children in the area. It has been great to see the maturity and focus that has been applied to this and, regardless of the result of this campaign, it will provide a wealth of learning opportunities.
Mrs Miller is very happy to have her form back! This week they have been exploring news events, using BBC Newsround as a starting point. Each pupil has been set a task to create a two minute presentation on a recent news story of their choice in the style of Newsround, i.e. easy to understand, pictures / videos and interesting to watch. The children will be presenting these during our morning sessions on a Wednesday and Thursday. PSHE this week has been exploring the idea of being ‘unique’ and what that means, and they have all created a word cloud which includes their individual qualities and characteristics that make them unique.
