Year 3 have continued to explore instructional texts this week and have written their own instructions for ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’. The children had a lengthy discussion about the best way to wash a mammoth and then made a detailed and clear set of instructions. Why not ask the children which mammoth products they planned to use?
In science, we have continued our exploration of rocks and have created both sedimentary and metamorphic rocks using crayons! First we collected sediments by scraping the crayons. We then gently squeeze the sediments together to make sedimentary rocks. We added heat to the rocks by floating our foil boat in some hot water (with the teachers’ help). When the sediments mixed and melted together, we had made metamorphic rocks. In topic, the children have been learning about the layers of the ocean. The children created a picture showing the Sunlight zone, Twilight zone, Midnight zone and the Abyss. They then looked at what lived in those layers.
Year 4 had another busy week rehearsing and learning, and it was a thrilling moment as each of the classes experienced their first dress rehearsal. What a marvellous sight awaits you in a couple of weeks time. Maths lessons this week involved the children using their understanding of the commutative to solve multiplication and division equations. In English the children looked at explanation texts. We used Wallace and Gromit’s Soccamatic machine to explore the different techniques used. The children created their own globes in topic lessons, drawing on the various continents and lines of longitude and latitude. Year 4 used their understanding of vertebrates and invertebrates to classify a variety of different animals. Ask your child to tell you what an exoskeleton is and see if they can name some animals that have one. The week concluded with each class having a small party to celebrate birthdays, what a wonderful way to end such a busy week!
When Sophie became Charity Rep for Year 4, she was asked to research a range of charities to help choose which ones the school could support this year. Sophie particularly was interested in a local charity, Keech Hospice Care because she knows a family that have used Keech personally. During the first lockdown Sophie raised over £1000 for the NHS cycling a marathon. A few weeks ago she came up with the idea that she wanted to do something for charity in Lockdown 2! She went for a slightly warmer activity and set herself a reading challenge. Never to be outdone by his sister, Ted decided he wanted to join in and between them they have set themselves a challenge of trying to read over 100 books in our 28 day lockdown. Halfway through lockdown and Sophie and Ted have already read 59 books. They read at bedtime, in the car and have reading time on the sofa. This weekend they aim to each read one book with breakfast, lunch and dinner and also climb into their reading tent together to share stories. Sophie and Ted, you are inspirational! Well done and keep going.
Congratulations to Oliver who has received the Blue Peter Music badge, designed by Ed Sheeran. To obtain the badge, Oliver had to complete a form, where he had to describe why he enjoyed playing music, and send a photo of him playing his drum kit. He spoke to his parents about the music they love and what it means to them and noted some memories which he then wrote about. The final part was to list some of his favourite songs and music and explain why he likes them.
