In Science, year 5 have started to investigate solubility. For their first lesson they explored what items dissolved and which did not. They were able to use items in their kitchens to test and have a practical lesson remotely.
In English, year 6 read ‘Wonder’ over the holidays and have spent time this week considering the idea of social abnormality. Over Google Meet and making use of IT resources such as Padlet, they reflected with compassion and kindness over the question: what makes one normal? They have begun a piece of non-fiction writing and at the end of the week will have produced an informative leaflet on the syndrome presented in ‘Wonder’.
Year 5 read ‘Varjak Paw’ over the holidays. This week, they have used Google Meet to discuss it as a group and have reflected together on an extract, considering how the author created effective surroundings. Using the extract for inspiration, they ventured outside into their own surroundings and used sensory language and other imagery to describe it. Some pupils even took further inspiration from the book, and wrote from the perspective of a cat. This made for brilliantly entertaining reading!
In Maths, year 5 have hit the ground running and got straight on with equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions. They have all risen to the challenge of producing maths work on Google Slides and clearly enjoying the new way of working.
Year 6 have embraced the challenge of ratio and proportion. They started the week simplifying ratios and remembering to cancel ratios to their lowest form before moving onto calculating fractions and percentages of ratios.
In Drama this term year 5’s topic is called ‘Clowning Around’. This week they have been learning about the history of clowns, their origin and the names of the most popular types of clowns. They have been creating either a slideshow or a video telling us all the key facts they have learnt. Year 6 will be creating their own radio plays this term. This week they have been understanding the history of the radio play and why these were so popular. They created their own presentations on their findings. Next week they will be working on their voices and how we can change our voices to portray a variety of characters. In French, year 5 have started learning the name of different places in town. They have enjoyed playing interactive games on Linguascope to consolidate their learning of new vocabulary. In the next few weeks they will move on to describing their town and expressing opinions.
Year 6 have created conversations and written work describing where they live. They have been introduced to the expression ‘je voudrais habiter’ to talk about where they would like to live. Next week they will learn vocabulary about their house.
And finally, Max and his siblings have been making visors for the NHS. What a lovely way to support them during this epidemic. Well done Max!
