A huge thank you to all parents who supported the school’s book stall by donating preloved books or buying new ones. The stall was busy all day and it was a great opportunity to talk to so many of you about your children’s reading preferences and find new books for them to enjoy. Miss Leighton, Miss Harding and I were also very pleased to promote three magazines which help stretch children: Britannica Magazine for general knowledge; First News for current affairs; and Storytime for bite-sized fiction. These subscriptions make excellent presents and help to broaden your children’s reading diets, helping them to become interesting and interested individuals with an understanding of the world around them. I have put up a display in the Apthorp lobby for those of you who may have missed the promotion.
Below, school journalist, Sophie G, whose family was lucky enough to win the free digital First News subscription, writes about the Christmas book stall.
The book stall will be back in March during the week of World Book Day, Thursday 2nd March. Reading for pleasure lies at the heart of academic success; increases in recent lexile tests, which measure a child’s comprehension of text and vocabulary, are always highest for the children who read the most for pleasure! This is turn to leads to success across the curriculum which is more easily accessed by fluent readers with broad vocabularies.
Every year at the Christmas Fair Mrs Broadis runs an amazing book stall in the sports hall - one of the biggest and busiest stalls at the fair selling books continuously throughout the day.
This year was no different - the stall was impressive and stretched the whole width of the sports hall and was piled high with lots of pre-owned and new fiction and non-fiction books for all ages and lexile levels. Children from all year groups were excitedly browsing and buying books.
One section of the stall had examples of magazines and newspapers like First News, Britannica and Storytime which are good quick reads and a different section had lots of learning books and cards to aid revision and vocabulary.
This stall is one of the best so if you missed out on visiting it on Saturday be sure to keep an eye out for it next time it pops up at school around World Book Day - there is always an amazing choice, good book advice from Mrs Broadis and the books are all of great value.
