Music
Year 7 and 8 were composing their own Gamelan 8 note cycle pattern this week. Using their sarons, demungs and pekings each pair created a gamelan 8 note pattern. They also continued to rehearse their Balinese wedding song and this week adding the gongs to the cycle. The gongs are a symbol of unity and are played on every new cycle. They thoroughly enjoyed playing the gongs and are looking forward to learning about the symbols next week. Year 5 were creating their own compositions this week based on a musical element. Each group were given a musical element, for example timbre, texture, dynamics, pitch, structure and tempo and using the instruments given to them had to show the rest of the group what element they had without telling the rest of the class. There were some fantastic compositions and everyone got involved and were creative!
Year 3J had their first ever online music lesson! They learnt all about the saxophone. They learnt how the instrument makes a sound, what a reed is, what material it's made out of, and they even watched a mini concert by Mrs Eglinton! If you would like your son/daughter to learn an instrument, please contact Mrs Eglinton on jeglington@edgegrove.com.
They also produced a fantastic composition based on the rhythms they have been learning about, quavers, crotchets and minims using body percussion!
Lucky in Year 6 has been practising over the holidays and has been preparing for his latest exam. This performance is fantastic and is definitely worth a watch. You can watch his video here (please note that you will need to be logged in with an Edge Grove email account to access this folder).
Art
The children are fully immersed in this term’s projects. The children in Year 3 are learning about ‘tone’ and have been challenged to create a scale of tones from darkest to lightest over eight stages. They will use their new knowledge and skills to transform a 2D form into a 3D form.
The children in Year 4 are finding out about contemporary artist Hundertwasser and how he composes his artworks. The children have been focusing this week on roof tops and windows. Once they are completely familiar with Hundertwasser’s art style the children will compose their own Hundertwasser inspired artworks.
The children in year 5 have been learning about the Tudors in history and this is linked to their project this term. This week the children looked at the fabrics, wallpaper and jewellery popular in Tudor times and had a go replicating them in their sketchbooks.
The Year 6 children are using their observational skills to draw autumnal seed heads. First they loosely sketched what they could see and then they transformed them into simple graphical line drawings. This is in preparation for their final pieces.
In Year 7 and 8, the children have been learning how to use oil pastels. They have discovered there are many techniques to choose from and are finding what works for them. Their final pieces will be created using oil pastels.
Drama
This week Year 4 have been looking at Roald Dahl’s Three Little Pigs and have been creating freeze frames to show the story.
Year 5 performed their monologues from an inanimate object's point of view and worked carefully on the expression and movement.
Year 6 have performed their voice overs to their super hero characters which were great. They focussed on over expression of their voice and thinking about how different tones and pitch can affect their performance.
The drama elective have been looking at camera angles as part of their page to screen unit. They have experimented with different angles to see the effect and perception this has on the audience.
