I can’t believe we are now less than three weeks away from half term! Despite the fact that we do not have our usual calendar of events running yet, the school is as alive and vibrant as ever and I am enjoying getting around each phase of the school to see learning in action. I enjoyed seeing some Year 6 English last week, languages lessons in the Lower School and I have just returned from story time in Pre-School. It is clear that the children are very happy to be back and levels of motivation and engagement are high.
We were pleased to be able to hold a 'grounds only' and socially distanced small group Pre Prep Open Day on Saturday for some of our prospective families for 2021. Having spent the last five years in the concrete Manhattan jungle, I am frequently reminded of just what a beautiful setting we are in and what incredible opportunities there are to enhance the children’s experiences, both inside and out of the classroom. I was delighted to hold the first meeting of our Diversity & Inclusion Working Party, which took place last Tuesday and included both staff and parent representatives. It is important to us that all members of our community play a part in shaping the culture of the school and, to that end, the working party provides an excellent space for shared support, consultation and advice.
The recent events in the USA earlier in the year following the death of George Floyd exposed the depth of the racism and bias that still exist in our society. It is clear that there are opportunities to grow, learn and improve, both individually and collectively as a community and an organisation. We are, therefore, committed as a school to spending more time understanding, exploring and identifying the contributory actions that we can take to be agents of change. If anyone else would like to be a part of this group then please do contact head@edgegrove.com. Wishing you all a fantastic week ahead. Lisa McDonald Head
