It is such a delight to have the school well and truly up and running! Year 5 and 6 have had a jam-packed week full of assessments in English and maths, alongside some exciting opportunities in other subjects across the curriculum. Miss McDonald gave both year groups an inspiring assembly with a very important message about following your dreams! Over the coming weeks, there is so much to look forward to, including the announcement of our Year 5 and Year 6 Pupil Council representatives.
In the classrooms, Year 5 have been investigating why animals evolve through marine iguanas in science. This has brought them to the end of the short unit of the characteristics of life and they are looking forward to starting their new topic about the heart and circulation. Year 6 have continued to find out about parts of a flower and have explored how they are adapted to allow animal pollination. They have created posters using real flowers to show the parts and their functions.
In DT/Textiles, Year 5 has completed a mind map full of ideas for their mask design. They are using their mind map as a tool to help them design a colourful mask. Pupils are starting to think about how they will make their mask and what type of embellishment they will need. Year 6 has completed a mind map full of ideas about the type of slipper they will design. They are starting to think about how they will make their slippers based on a shoe design.
In English, our Year 5s have been developing their understanding of how writers build up readers’ understanding of the characters in their writing, in particular, the legendary Aslan from The Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe. As budding writers, they have then taken some of C.S. Lewis’s skills and put them into their own work, describing fantastical beasts in increasing detail. Here is 5 Red, looking for new and rich vocabulary.
Characters have also been a focus with Year 6 who have been diving headfirst into Victorian London. Being a master of language, Charles Dickens left no imagination barren with his descriptions of Fagin and Dodger from Oliver Twist, and our junior literary critics have been analysing how Dickens provided us with an abundance of creative detail.
In French, Year 5 pupils have started using the verb être and avoir to talk about themselves. They have been introduced to a variety of adjectives that will be very useful to describe their personality in the coming weeks. They have enjoyed using Linguascope and a variety of games to consolidate their learning. Year 6 pupils have learnt the name of different films in French and have worked well in small groups asking each other what kind of films they enjoy. They have started to express opinions and they will continue looking at a variety of French vocabulary related to their hobbies and free-time.
