Year 5 It's been another busy week for Year 5! In French, they have learnt some new vocabulary associated with their school day, and have been impressing their teacher with their French conversations about their timetable. They've also begun to consider the similarities and differences between English and French schools.
In classics, pupils have enhanced their understanding of the Greek god Dionysus: exploring how he was celebrated by the people of Athens with an annual procession, a festival which involved all kinds of merriment including Greek comedy competitions and city wide parties! In History, they have begun to write their news reports on the Spanish Armada. They learnt the story, planned out their ideas, and decided on a snappy and eye-catching title this week, ready to write up next week. In science, pupils have applied all they have learnt about designing an investigation. They have learnt how to use the aim of an investigation to decide which is the independent variable and which is the dependent variable. In R.S. pupils have enjoyed learning the story of the birth of Moses, and used their drama skills to conduct interviews with Jochabed, Miriam and the Pharoahs’ daughter to explore how they might have felt at points in the story. In DT, pupils have worked hard designing, measuring, cutting and finishing their tangrams and are enjoying seeing their pieces come together. In textiles, pupils are adding embellishments to their finished masks and producing some beautiful results. Considering this is the first time they've used the tools, their DT and textiles teachers are extremely pleased with their progress and describe the quality of their work as 'outstanding'. Well done, Year 5!
Year 6 Another busy and exciting week in Year 6. In English, the children have been exploring a famous passage from ‘Hamlet’ and then taking inspiration from Shakespeare to compose their own soliloquies. In IT, the children have now completed their work on spreadsheet fundamental. Next week, in preparation for the ‘Theme Park Project’ next term, they will be looking at how to draw theme park rides in 3D using SketchUp. Year 6 geographers have been learning about how tourism can be sustainable, they have explored alternative energy sources, sustainable building materials and how locals can be involved in the development of tourist resorts. The children are busy designing their own eco tourist resorts and will be presenting their work to the class next week. Mrs Miller is particularly keen to hear how their buildings will be sustainable and what activities they will provide for the tourists. In their RS lessons, pupils have got into the Christmas spirit and begun exploring The Nativity, considering its relevance today. After reading and watching the story, the pupils identified and considered aspects of trust, faith, generosity and kindness in the ancient story that Christians still abide by today. They recorded their ideas on a group padlet before organising and sequencing a story board. PRIMARY MATHS CHALLENGE 2020 Last week a total of 124 pupils from Years 4-6 sat this year's paper, containing 25 problem-solving questions. The first 20 were multiple choice with the last few requiring a numerical answer and proving very tricky. Congratulations to everyone who took the challenge and well done to the 85 who received a bronze, silver or gold certificate. The highest score was 21 out of 25, recorded by both Hugh P and Zachary O in Year 6 and a special mention goes to Year 4's Robert C with an excellent 17/25.
