Production of handmade soap, hampers, personalised face mask bags, spray-painted baubles and other delightful decorations has been underway. Behind the scenes, the children are calculating prices, forecasting profit margins, designing websites and creating advertisements. We look forward to opening the online shop soon!
English In Year 7 Hamlet continues in the English classrooms across the middle and upper schools this week. Class discussions have explored some of the play’s key themes: revenge, madness and ambition. In prep this week, the Year 7s took a close look at a work of art depicting Ophelia, one of the most well known paintings inspired by Hamlet. Created by the pre-Raphaelite artist John Millais it shows her drifting along the water, draped in flowers and singing. Congratulations to Liam E in blue set whose work captivated Mr Lester:
Ophelia By Liam E
She ignored the whisper and kept floating. Usually when she sang, birds joined in with her. But all they did was watch while whispering “Stop Ophelia, stop….” She continued ignoring all sounds except her voice as her singing continued, ignoring all hazards and not realizing her fate. Her mind drifted to another world of smiling flowers and fluffy clouds.
Water reeds sprung from the dark blue of the river that drifted Ophelia across the navy blueness of the water. She swayed from side to side as the rivers got more rapid while her mind floated away more like she was floating on the river. All of sudden she got pushed down. She snapped out of the world she was in but it was all too late.
Geography Year 7 have been joining geography remotely this week. We have been exploring the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake now that we are 10yrs on and the children have been reading various sources to gather information. They are using their research to create a presentation on slides that they will stand up and present to their class when back in school. They are under strict instructions to make their presentations easy to understand, interesting and informative. They are working to a set of success criteria which insist they organise their findings in to distinct headings i.e. social, economic, environmental.
Year 8 are working on their map skills in class at present. We have reviewed the skills learnt back in Year 5 and have been refining these to bring them up to CE standard. They have an end of unit assessment this week and we will complete the term with global locations practice.
