Failing is part of life, and whilst failure is often a learning opportunity children do not tend to see it this way, often viewing failure as something negative and to be feared. The good news is how failure is perceived is something that can be influenced and therefore teaching children that failing is okay, an opportunity to learn, is key to fostering a positive mindset that can be adopted when things do not go to plan.
So how do we teach kids to fail well, to use failure as fuel to motivate them to overcome challenges to succeed? The first step is to look to ourselves, to model self-compassion and normalise that life and learning is full of ups and downs and that it is okay not to have all the answers, or indeed ability right away. Fostering this mindset will help to combat feelings of threat and putting up barriers, a common response that a fear of failure can influence.
