I mentioned to a little boy that he had beautiful, big blue eyes and without missing a beat he said “All the better to see you with Mrs Emmerson” and this in a nutshell is why I adore my job! Pre-School are capturing all the elements of this particular traditional tale and have recreated the deep dark wood where Little Red Riding Hood’s grandma lives. Opportunities for the development of pre-reading sequencing skills, rich language and imagination are all here in this little corner of creativity. In Pre Prep we teach literacy skills through the medium of real books and in Reception we have all enjoyed the adventures of Stickman by Julia Donaldson; in my opinion this is a complicated book to sequence and yet the children correct me when I get in wrong. The development of the links to missing his family have also been explored, as we continue to discover more about our own homes and those dear to us. Year 1 explored the book The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt and showed empathy for the crayons who are scattered everywhere and anywhere by a careless Douglas. Just like in the book we wrote postcards, evoking those days before texting when writing or receiving a postcard from a holiday destination kept us in touch with our family and friends and said simply, we are thinking of you. Year 2 are travelling back in time to 1666 and the Great Fire of London. The art of diary writing is being explored using Samuel Peyps and his famous musing as our inspiration, both in terms of chronological diary writing itself and using his diaries as an historical source. I was very impressed by 2 Cedar’s portraits of Peyps using water colours - his wig looks particularly splendid!
