Year 5 With the end of term fast approaching Year 5 have been very busy in all their subjects. In geography they have been getting to grips with their map skills. Last week each class celebrated having tackled 4 figure grid references with some very challenging and competitive games of battleships! The children were able to give 4 figure references and receive 4 figure references in order to try and sink each others’ ships, it was a lot of fun as the pictures show! Continuing to be inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Year 5 have been working on ghost stories. They have looked at the way writers create suspense and build tension. We are looking forward to reading the pupils’ efforts. In Science, the children have been learning about representing forces as arrows and how the size of the arrow will reflect the size of the forces. They have been using them to identify which direction an object will move in. They have extended this into using the amount of Newtons and calculating the resultant force. With Mr Kay in computing the basic functions of spreadsheets have been introduced and explored, quite a few of the pupils have been showing a flair for this and have even done some extra learning at home! Year 6 As we approach the end of an action packed term it has been a busy week working towards the completion of projects in various subjects. Adding the finishing touches to their passive speakers in DT, and stitching their slippers together in textiles, Year 6 have produced work to a very high standard. In maths it is the end of the fractions unit and some have been doing problem solving with formulae. In French the children have continued pretending to be tourists in Paris and have been talking about what they did in France. In History they are writing a newspaper report on the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the causes of World War 1. In Latin it has been time to step inside the law courts of ancient Pompeii where they have followed the trial of Hermogenes, a Greek merchant who is on trial for theft! A productive week and a pleasure to see Year 6 continuing to work hard to the very end of term.
