Middle School
Year 5 have been working hard throughout lockdown learning about outer Space and the Solar System, especially how this affects the Earth and gives us day/night, seasons, moon phases etc. This week we have looked at the stars and how constellations have been created. The children have a good understanding that these are created by humans and vary from culture to culture. They have created their own constellations and written stories about their origins.
Year 6 have been able to start their chemistry unit and we are looking forward to returning to school and carrying out hands on investigations.
In Classics this week Year 5 have been learning about the wedding of Peleus and Thetis and how the festivities heavily contributed to the events of the Trojan war. Pupils have done a great deal of research into the gods that attended and what special powers they possessed to form an RSVP to the original wedding invite. Attached is an example ‘from Zeus’ who discusses how his qualities and powers will affect his presence at the wedding.
In Geography, Year 5 have been studying biomes and were tasked with creating their own biomes projects with optional models. I have been overwhelmed by the incredible submissions that have come in. Some have produced their own video documentaries and I can see budding Attenborough enthusiasts in our midsts! The research shows a genuine interest in their work and their use and explanation of key words reflects a high level of understanding. I have included below some photos of the models I have been fortunate enough to receive.
I have to give a special mention to Ridley, Sophia, Tara and Natasha who produced outstanding video documentaries. Natasha roped in her brother (an ex Edge Grove pupil) to help her. The video was incredibly well researched, presented and recorded. I cannot wait to show the rest of the class.
Ridley gave an outstanding performance as a professor - and dressed up for the part. His video was really well researched and presented, I am so proud of how much effort some of the year 5’s have gone to.
Sophia is a natural presenter and I can see her following in Attenborough’s footsteps with her very detailed report on her biome. It was thoroughly researched with every single box on the success criteria ticked.
Tara Shah delivered her information in such an engaging way including a great model of the ocean which moved and helped her explain the impact of plastics in the ocean.
