Music, Drama, Art
Drama Year 4 have been very excited this week as we have started to block their plays on stage. In Year 5 the children performed their Fairy Tale news reports and there was some excellent characterisation shown in a number of their performances. Year 6 has been learning about thought tracking of a character and how various characters influence the decisions of others. To show this they created freeze frames of how others reacted to their alter egos compared to the super heroes. This half term sees a new rotation in Year 7 & 8 and so a new group has been learning about the history of silent movies. They then created their own short comical sketch using music and the key features of genre; focusing particularly on their over exaggerated facial expressions. The drama elective group have been looking at how to write a screenplay and used Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone as a stimulus and example to start to write their own screenplays. This week also saw the year 7 & 8 drama scholarship group start again; much to the excitement of the pupils and Ms Neale! It was great that even the scholars that were off could still join Google Meets so we could begin a red through of a script we hope to perform in the very near future.
Music Year 5 have been composing some fabulous music based on the famous Great Gate of Kiev painting, which Mussorky wrote for his prestigious Pictures in an exhibition work. Please listen to Maria and Bella’s fantastic compositions here!
The Music elective Year 7 and 8 class have just started the topic of 20th century music this week. They have been listening and analysing Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, which is a fantastic example of the early years of 20th century music. The pupils composed their own piece based on Twinkle Twinkle, changing it to make it in the style of Stravinsky!
Year 6 have been producing their own story boards this week based on their topic this term which is film music. Next week they will be composing together their own compositions that will sync in with their own story board they produced this week.
Year 4 choir have been working hard this week recording their Christmas carols in preparation for Radlett turning on their Christmas lights in a few weeks time. The choir will be heard across the town on the night and Edge Grove will also be showcasing the Art department’s talent as well with Christmas paintings and art displays.
All of Pre Prep had a fantastic day learning all about space! They learnt all about Holst, The Planets and listened to Mars, the bringer of war. Mrs Eglinton played the piccolo to the classes while the pupils drew what they heard from the music! A very creative day indeed.
And finally, well done to Noah for receiving the Mrs McManus Special Award for his beautiful singing in the Haileybury Singing Competition. Art The children in Pre Prep had a fantastic day on Friday learning about space and the planets in our solar system. They made some wonderful images of the moon made from aluminium foil, using coins to create the craters. They also made some super alien masks!
All of the children in the Prep school are now embarking on their final pieces having spent the first half of the term learning skills and preparing their designs ready for this half term. The children in Year 3 have been creating their cave walls for the background of their stone age artworks using collage techniques.
In Year 4, the children are transferring their Hundertwasser inspired designs onto A3 watercolour paper. First they are doing this by using a faint pencil line to make sure they have positioned the detail of their designs into a good composition structure.
Year 5 are rolling out their clay pieces to make the base tile shape for the Tudor art inspired ceramics artworks. Meanwhile, Year 6 are now drawing their designs onto A3 acetate sheets using black permanent ink.
Year 7 and 8 have been working off-piste this week because we are creating some early Christmas related artworks to support the video recording this week of the choir, singing for the Radlett Christmas Festival.
Photography Both rotation and elective groups were out taking photographs this week on the theme of texture, there are some great photographs from both groups and I look forward to seeing how well the editing process goes.
The elective group started off editing some of their bubble images from before half term before taking photographs. Both groups have come back from half term refreshed with their creative ideas flowing.
