Year 5 In English, pupils are studying Shakespeare’s great tragic play Hamlet. This has driven the pupils' focus as they explore the complexities of the plot and character connections. In science, the pupils have started a new topic about forces. They have explored the difference between mass and weight and how they are linked to gravity; thinking about what this would mean on different planets and in outer space. A special mention must also go to Ayomide for making a fantastic model of the heart over half term. Well done Ayomide!
In geography, the pupils have kicked off the new half term with a progress review to see what they have/have not managed to retain from the previous half term. This certainly dusted off some cobwebs after two weeks of no school! We are using this half term to concentrate on our map skills and have started with map symbols. If you have an OS map at home please do share in this with your child, test them and see what symbols they recognise. In religious studies, pupils have enjoyed using modern film clips to explore the story of Joseph (and his Dreamcoat of course!). They watched the clips to help develop their understanding of the plot and used it to sequence the key events. Our next lesson will focus on the interpretations of the dreams within the story. In computing, pupils have started to learn how to present information using spreadsheets. This week we have specifically been looking at making graphs from different sets of data.
Year 6 In maths, pupils have been tackling problems involving multiples, factors and prime numbers as well as brushing up on their written division methods and skills. Through these topics they will explore patterns and connections between multiplication and division. In French, instead of physically exploring Paris, pupils we will go through some interesting facts and knowledge about the “City of Lights”. They will then be using the verb pouvoir + infinitives, in order to imagine what would have actually been doing there and then they will be expected to create their own sentences. In history, pupils have been completing their diaries on Scott of the Antarctic and some have begun to explore our new, exciting topic the ‘Titanic’. This week in Latin the pupils have been working in groups to translate stories, all based around the activities that took place in an ancient Roman forum. Once they formed an accurate translation, each group used this as a script to act out the events that occurred in their story for the rest of the class. An exciting and fun experience, bringing Latin to life. In textiles pupils have been working creatively learning how to interpret their slipper designs, looking at the shape so that they can make a basic slipper paper pattern. They are now investigating how different shapes can be put together to make a 3D product. The children have been training to use the power tools within the workshop this week in preparation for building their speakers. It has been good to see the mature approach to learning that the children have taken.
